Warm North is Tallinn-based brand, founded in the end of 2012 when first few products were launched. Aap Piho is the man behind it, managing the brand and developing the products. He wanted to start a furniture company, which is timeless and honest, which does not care about the latest trends, but it stands for simplicity and quality. Warm North just wants to make supernormal furniture for people with supernormal worldview, inspired by everyday life in the North, where rough climate and warm materials meet.
Products are made in collaboration with few Estonian designers on a widespread network, including different manufacturers from woodwork to metalwork. Warm North chooses materials which gain charm with time instead of wearing out. Their tables are simple, functional and timeless, made from high quality solid wood, perfect for dining room, cafe or a restaurant, matching any interior. A special piece is a multifunctional Side Table with a single smaller tray and a thick, naturally tanned leather book rack. Its light weight and small size allow to move it around very easily. The Market Crates are inspired by farmers’ market, – they can be easily stacked to organize your goods for saving space. Use it for storing your magazines, fresh fruit or bottles. But the coat hangers The Moons are made of dolomite stone which is a valued construction material that Nordic people has used for thousands of years. The brand wants to expand the usage of this stone, creating these beautiful coat hooks.
Aap Piho thinks that furniture is not only about shape, color or functionality. Warm North builds furniture relying on their cultural background, using general knowledge of doing things the way they’ve been made in North for a very long time. Using the art of design, brand tells stories about Nordic culture – the way they eat, the way they work, socialize and so on, therefore handing this knowledge over to the next generations. The brand chooses not to follow as much traditional principles of product design, but particularly the individual character, traditions and culture of the Nordic region by reconsidering proven archetypes and principles in furniture making. Warm North will continue to promote Estonian and North-Eastern European design, with a strong belief that cultural backgrounds of Latvians, Lithuanians, Polish, Russians are very rich and, if used wisely – we might expect something great emerging out of this rich soil of Eastern European culture.
